Walsh x Universal Works. A little closer to home.

Made for Bolton, Nottingham, Tokyo, London, or wherever you call home.

Universal Works has friends and partners all over the world, but for our latest collaboration we headed a little closer to home, to Bolton and the factory of British footwear maker Walsh.

It is a part of the country we know well. We are based down the road in Nottingham, while our Co-Founder Stephanie grew up nearby in Rochdale.

We first worked with Walsh several years ago. Returning to the factory this time, things felt different; “It felt like something had been reawakened,” says David, UW’s other Co-Founder. “There was a new energy about the place. It felt alive and hopeful.”

Together, we have revisited three classic Walsh styles, each in three colourways: the Ensign, Tornado and Cobra, taking something from the past and giving it a contemporary Universal Works feel.

Featuring: Walsh x Universal Works Olive Flight Nylon Club Coach Jacket, Olive Jazz Check Standard Shirt, Black Cat Cord Grad Chino, Walsh x Universal Works Ensign in Black Leather/Canvas.

Featuring: Indigo Future Denim OG Bakers Chore Jacket, Blue Check Charlie Check Attendant Shirt, Indigo Future Denim Grad Chino, Walsh x Universal Works Tornado in Brown Leather/Canvas.

The Cobra also got a new name: the Cob. In Nottingham, a cob is a bread roll. In Lancashire, you might call it a barm cake. Different names for the same simple, everyday essential. We could argue about which one is right all day.

Featuring: Blue Wool Fleece Cardigan, Navy/Blue Brush Panel Check 1 Lazy Day Shirt, Dutch Pant in Indigo Work Denim, Walsh x Universal Works Cob in Tan.
“The Cob is a bit of Nottingham meeting Bolton,” says David. “It comes from an original Walsh style, reworked for today. A new essential."

That sums up the collaboration rather nicely; a celebration of where things come from, without getting stuck in the past.
