Introducing Universal Works Lyon.

📍 10 Rue d'Algérie, 69001 Lyon, France.

"There should be no pressure, no hard sell. Just a space people can be comfortable in, whether they are looking around, trying things on or simply stopping by." – David Keyte, Universal Works Co-Founder

We are pleased to share that Universal Works Lyon is now open.

Created in partnership with our long-time stockists at Shoez Gallery, the opening marks the next step in a relationship that has grown steadily over many years. Introduced through our French agent Franck, what began as a stockist partnership gradually developed through shared ideas, mutual trust and a common approach to retail.

Occupying the space that used to house Shoez Gallery’s sister store Dope, UW Lyon sits in the northern part of Presqu'île, a neighbourhood that has long been one of the city’s most characterful areas. Filled with independent businesses, specialist shops, cafés, bars and restaurants, it is a place with a strong sense of identity and community. "An old part of the city, but with a vibrant community and some very cool stores. The sort of area you always hope to find in every city you visit," says David, UW Co-Founder.

As Julie, Shoez Gallery Co-Founder explains: "This neighbourhood is special because it has always had an alternative spirit. There are lots of independent businesses, each specialised in their own field. This creates a flow of people who are interested in more niche and independent offerings."

For us, Partnership Stores have never been about just arriving in a city and opening a shop. They are about working with people who already understand what Universal Works stands for and creating something that belongs where it is.

Julie and her husband Florent have been part of the neighbourhood for years, and that personal connection sits at the heart of the store. "I consider my work to be an integral part of my life. We work as a couple, our children come by every day after school, and our customers are regulars with whom we share stories about our lives."

That sense of familiarity and openness is reflected throughout the new space. While it shares the recognisable elements of a Universal Works Partnership Store, the character of the building itself has been preserved wherever possible. Original features have been retained, reducing waste and creating a shop that feels connected to its surroundings. Honest materials, practical fittings and a straightforward approach to design allow the clothing to take centre stage.

More than anything, Julie wanted the space to feel welcoming. "I have always wanted people to walk into my shop and feel at home," she says. “I wanted it to have a warm, intimate atmosphere, where the product feels perfectly in tune with the neighbourhood and the staff."

David shares a similar view: "There should be no pressure, no hard sell. Just a space people can be comfortable in, whether they are looking around, trying things on or simply stopping by."

Because ultimately, the success of a Partnership Store is not measured by square footage or location. It is measured by the people inside it. "Customers are advised, never pressured. They are listened to, but never judged. Above all, I want them to consider the shop an essential place to stop by, with their family, with friends, or simply to say hello."

With Universal Works Lyon, a new chapter begins in a neighbourhood that already feels like home.
